On the night of 19/20 February 1944, the Royal Air Force's Bomber Command attacks Leipzig with 823 bombers. Although heavy damage is inflicted on the city, this attack has disastrous consequences for Bomber Command. Seventy-eight planes and their crews are lost because of collisions in the air, anti aircraft fire and German night fighters.
